About us

The Interministerial Committee for Human Rights (CIDU) was established by Ministerial Decree No. 519 of 15 February 1978 (complemented by Ministerial Decree No. 2000/517 of 5 September 2013) for the purpose of primarily fulfilling Italy’s obligations under international agreements and Conventions on human rights protection and promotion.

CIDU is located within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), is chaired by a senior career diplomat and is composed of representatives from ministries, administrations and bodies that deal with human rights issues in various capacities. It also includes three eminent figures from the academic and scientific world.

The Committee carries out its activities with the support of ministerial staff and is allocated an annual budget established by Law No. 80 of 19 March 1999.

Since 25 October 2024, the Committee has been chaired by Minister Plenipotentiary Giovanni Battista Iannuzzi.
